Fale mo Aiga – Pacific Housing Strategy 2030 launches today

Today, Te Manatū mō ngā Iwi ō Te Moana-nui-ā-Kiwa/the Ministry for Pacific Peoples (MPP), Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities (Kāinga Ora) launched the first strategy for Pacific housing. 

Fale mo Aiga – Pacific Housing Strategy and Action Plan 2030 (Fale mo Aiga) is the Government’s targeted response to the needs and aspirations of Pacific communities and a commitment to supporting better outcomes for Pacific peoples.  

Developed collaboratively by MPP, HUD, and Kāinga Ora, Fale mo Aiga promotes coordinated action across the housing system.  

“Pacific peoples are disproportionately affected by the housing crisis, experiencing some of the worst housing outcomes of any population in Aotearoa New Zealand. Achieving change will not be easy and we need a collective effort over many years. Fale mo Aiga represents the individual and joint commitment of our agencies to support Pacific Aotearoa to achieve their housing aspirations,” said Malo Ah-You, General Manager Māori Housing, who has led HUD’s work on the Pacific Housing Strategy.  

“Fale mo Aiga was based on the stories and hopes for the future that Pacific communities shared at regional talanoa in 2018. The strategy acknowledges the importance of home ownership to Pacific peoples, as a means of providing for security of tenure and intergenerational wealth transfer. However, the importance of supporting Pacific families wherever they are in their housing journey, whether they are in public housing, private rentals, or looking to buy a home, is also recognised,” Malo said.  

The strategy was launched with a visit to Penina Housing Trust’s new public homes in Red Hill, Auckland, designed specifically for Pacific families, and a celebration at a local community centre.
